As we have discussed, this move is more about quality of life for my family and I, than Chelsea, or getting rich or some such. If I wanted to get rich, I would have stayed in the States or stayed here to work my ass off to keep my awesome things. We are downsizing, seeing the world, giving our son (hopefully) a different perspective on life and that it not about all the "things" you collect. To be honest, he thinks the world should be handed to him and he has a right to have/do anything he wants. He has been lucky to be born in a great country and never want for anything, I think its time for him to find out most the world is not that lucky!
We've not gone communist or anything, but tired of working crazy hours to support a lifestyle that really...we don't need. It has become (in our life and I would dare say, society) that we work FOR our "stuff" or to keep our "stuff", time to slow down and smell the coffee. We don't NEED a 2000+ sq ft house, but we could afford it, as long as we worked hard and long for it...seems kinda backwards now that I've had a good think about it. So, we will work to get the things we "NEED" and time off to enjoy it. I truly beieve travel will educate Josh and hopefully snap him out of this "trance" he's been in.
Some inspiration for our decision:
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” – Mark Twain
“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
“To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – Bill Bryson
“Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.” – Mark Jenkins
Its not as simple as all this or maybe it is. I've never been one to want to think "what if", and god love my wife she has embraced that idea as well. I have been a traveller, since I can remember, got it from my parents and it really gives you a different perpsective on life and people.
“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” – Jack Kerouac
On the road...soon enough
